Duane entered the U.S. Army on April 20, 1953. His basic training was at Camp Chaffee, AR, and was transferred to Fort Collins, CO, until being honorably discharged on April 19, 1955. On September 2, 1953, Duane married Joyann Hansen. They lived in Colorado Spring while he was in the Army and their first son, Michael, was born at the Fort Collins Army Hospital. After his discharge, Duane farmed east of Norfolk in Stanton County. The couple had three more children, Mark, Michelle and Marty. In addition to farming, Duane sold Kent Feed for several years. After retiring the couple moved to Norfolk in 2008. He served as president for the Norfolk Pork Producers and Stanton County School District 12. Duane enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved playing the accordion and listening to polka music. Mr. Nathan died Monday, April 16, 2018, at the Norfolk Veteran’s Home. Visitation will be Thursday, March 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Home for Funerals. The funeral service for Duane E. Nathan will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 20, 2018, at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Reverend Ryan Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard, American Legion Post 16 and the V.F.W. Post 1644. He is survived by his wife, Joyann ; one son and one daughter; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Michael and Marty; and brother, Alfred Nathan Jr. Home for Funerals of Norfolk, Nebraska is in charge of arrangements.
