Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military rites. Duane died October 2, 2016 at his home. Duane E. Pehl, son of Edward and Evelyn (Kendall) Pehl was born June 14, 1947 in Upland, CA. When he was a young child his family moved to SD. He attended school in Barnard, graduating with the class of 1965. He entered the United States Navy in 1966, was stationed at Guam, and honorably discharged in 1970. He worked in California for a short time, later moving back to SD. In 1972, Duane opened a Mobil Gas Station in Watertown. Duane was united in marriage to Laurel Pies on April 14, 1973 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Waubay. They sold the gas station and moved back to Barnard to the family farm. He farmed and raised hogs for nearly 20 years. While farming, he also delivered for Hedahls and was a night shift manager at Coca-Cola. Before retiring he worked at Twin City Fan for 14 years. Dewey was a true car enthusiast and owned several classic cars. In his younger years he liked to deer and West River antelope hunt. Dewey loved his family deeply and was proud of his children. Grateful for having shared Duane’s life are his wife of 43 years, Laurel; children, Dawn (Dale) Hopfinger, Sandy (Tony) Emery, and Dwight (Kelsie) Pehl; sister, Judy Pehl; brother, Loren (Kathy) Pehl; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
