Description	:	Duane L. "Whitey" Nelson, 84, of Lincoln, died Dec. 6, 2014 from complications of dementia. Duane was born Oct. 19, 1930, in Minden to Roy and Bessie (Bloom) Nelson. He graduated from Axtell High School and Kearney State Teachers College. After college, Duane served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He went on to earn a Juris Doctorate from the University of Nebraska College of Law. He worked for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., before returning to Lincoln, where he worked as an assistant U.S. attorney, director of the Nebraska Crime Commission, special prosecutor for the Wounded Knee... He graduated from Axtell High School and Kearney State Teachers College. After college, Duane served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He went on to earn a Juris Doctorate from the University of Nebraska College of Law. He worked for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., before returning to Lincoln, where he worked as an assistant U.S. attorney, director of the Nebraska Crime Commission, special prosecutor for the Wounded Knee reservation uprising, and in private practice. Duane was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Fern Jelden. He is survived by two sons, Andy (Heather) of Overland Park, Kan., and Joel (Amy) of Lincoln; his ex-wife, Kathy, of Lincoln; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Duane's family would like to thank the staff of Bickford of Lincoln and Sumner Place for Duane's excellent care in his last years. Cremation. No visitation. Interment will be at a later date in the Bethany Lutheran Church cemetery in Axtell. Memorials may be made to the Foundation for Lincoln City Libraries, 136 S. 14th Street, Lincoln, NE, 68508.
