One of Jamestown's best known and loved citizens was lost when Duncan McKellar, 94 years of age, died at his home in San Antonio, Texas, Thursday, July 6. The body was brought to Jamestown the following Saturday, accompanied by the daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Francis Linville. The editor of the Jamestown Optimist offers the following tribute to Mr. McKellar's memory. Mr. McKellar came to this state in the early days and did his part in weathering the hardships and building the country to what it is at the present time. Among the special features in his life might be mentioned the facts: He was on the town site of Leadville, Colorado, when the city was plotted, and assisted in building the Harrison Reduction Works, the first masonry work done in Leadville in 1877. He helped organize, and was the first justice of the peace, and was instrumental in establishing the first post office in Allen township in Jewell county. He was one of the eight men appointed from Kansas by Gov. Leweling as a delegate to the Gulf Transportation Congress held in Chicago in 1892. He was three times elected mayor of the city of Jamestown and has held other city and township offices. He will be missed by his relatives and a host of friends and acquaintances and the name of Duncan McKellar will be remembered long by all citizens of this city and surrounding country. A worthy citizen and a great soul has gone to his reward. Of the life the following is quoted from the Jamestown Optimist: Duncan McKellar was born near London, Ontario, Canada, March 22, 1828 and died in San Antonio, Texas, July 6, 1922, aged 94 years, 3 months and 14 days. He was married to Margaret McCall in 1853 and they immigrated to Ottawa, Kansas in the fall of 1870 where Mrs. McKellar did in 1871. D.P. McKellar, Peter McKellar and Mrs. Mary Certain were born to this union. Petery dying in infancy. In May 1872 he with his family located on a homestead in Jewell county, Kansas. He was married to Mary O'Neil of London, Ontario, December 17, 1878 and to this union was born Mrs. Frances E. Linville, now of San Antonio, Texas. He moved to Jamestown, Kansas in 1888 and engaged in the Real Estate and Insurance business for a number of years, retiring from business in 1908 and he and his wife made their home from then on with their daughter Mrs. F.E.
