Dwayne Cecil Newman, 82 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Bryan Medical Center – East Campus in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dwayne was born February 10, 1937 in Chase County, west of Champion, the youngest of two children of Cecil and Cleopa (Mead) Newman. In 1958, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Joyce E. Davison at Chanute, Illinois and to this union four sons were born: Dan, Dean, Darren and Delwin. Dwayne served his country in the United States Air Force, and was stationed in Alaska. After serving in the Air Force, the family made their home in Imperial until 1965, when they moved to Holdrege. While in Holdrege, Dwayne served as Phelps County Sheriff until his retirement after 38 years of service. Following retirement, Dwayne enjoyed working for the City of Holdrege in the parks and recreation department. One of his favorite past-times was walking the ditch across from the Holdrege Country Club collecting golf balls. On December 29, 2010, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce. Besides his wife, Joyce; Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Darren Jay Newman; sister, Jerry Phelps; and sister-in-law, Farris Bernard and her husband, Howard. He leaves to celebrate his life; his three sons: Dan Newman and his wife, Kristi of Axtell, Nebraska; Dean Newman of Loomis, Nebraska; and Delwin Newman and his wife, Lisa of Salina, Kansas; three granddaughters: Tailer Rogers; Darienne Newman; and Shelby Newman; one great-grandson, Isaac; brother-in-law, Stanley Davison and his wife, Betty of Garden City, Missouri; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. A memorial has been established in Dwayne’s honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
