Leadbetter, age 74, passed away Monday November 30, 2009 at his home under the care of his loving wife of 27 years, Karen and Hospice of the Red River Valley and surrounded by family and friends. Leadbetter, age 74, passed away Monday November 30, 2009 at his home under the care of his loving wife of 27 years, Karen and Hospice of the Red River Valley and surrounded by family and friends. Dwayne was born on August 5, 1935 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City to Harrison and Olive (Bragg) Leadbetter. He was raised on a farm south of Luverne, ND. He attended rural grade school at Baldwin and Grand Prairie, north of Valley City and one year at Star Lake School 108 near Dent, MN. He attended his first year of high school at Pelican Rapids, MN and the next three years at Valley City High School, graduating in 1954. While in high school he took part in several sports, speech team, drama, class plays, choir, and FFA. During high school he was active at Our Saviors Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed, and became a full member. He still is a member today. He also sang in the church choir. When he was a junior in high school Dwayne joined Company G, 164th Infantry, ND National Guard. After about 2 years he obtained the rank of Sergeant and then attended and completed crane and shovel operating school at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He was the instructor for the crane and shovel operators of Headquarters Company, 141 Engineer Battalion in Valley City for several years, serving with the local guard for approximately 8½ years. After high school he completed a mechanics course at Hansen's Mechanical School in Fargo. On April 1, 1956 he married Leila Anderson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. This union brought forth four children: Steven Leadbetter, Atlanta, GA, Lori (Bill) Leatherbee, Florence, KY, Scott (Sue) Leadbetter, Valley City, ND, and LeAnn Leadbetter, Minneapolis, MN. While their children attended Washington Elementary School Dwayne became president of the PTA and helped make the switch to PTO, which it still is today. Dwayne worked as a milk truck driver and deliveryman for about a year and also operated a caterpillar for the Barnes County Highway Dept for a season before going to work at the Pepsi bottling company, first as a bottle sorter and then as truck delivery. He worked in the plant and eventually became the plant manager and bottler for a few years. He then worked for Webster Plumbing and Heating for 25 years. While working for Webster's Dwayne also owned and operated the DX Café, which he later sold. On November 30, 1982 Dwayne married Karen Geiger. Together this union brought a son, Jason Leadbetter, Fargo, ND. Dwayne was a very active member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #2192. He served and chaired many different committees of both the local aerie and the Dakota State Aerie. He went through all the chairs and served as a trustee for Aerie #2192. He organized the local Past Presidents club and served as secretary for ten years. He was elected a state officer and went through all the chairs becoming Dakota State President for the 1982-1983 year. He was also a member of the AmVets. In 1989, Dwayne started Dwayne's Heating and Air Conditioning. Even though he was getting weaker, Dwayne continued to work when he was able, right up until the time of his death. His hobbies included working with wood; constructing several different buildings. He took most pride in his work when he built the deck and gazebo onto their house and the large tree house he made for his son, Jason. His greatest blessings and joys were the times spent with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He will be missed by family, friends, and of course his coffee group. Dwayne is survived by his wife, Karen; 5 children Steve, Lori, Scott, LeAnn, and Jason; 5 grandchildren Jaci Heidt, Joshua Leadbetter, Michael Leadbetter, Anna Leadbetter, and Luje Leatherbee; 2 great grandchildren Dillan Heidt and Kenadi Heidt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half-sister Kathleen Tobelman, brother-in-law Harvey Tobelman, brother-in-law Wendel Flesburg, half-brother Kenneth Heimbusch, an infant brother, sister-in-law Virginia Leadbetter, a nephew, and a son-in-law, Donald Flatlie. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Valley City with Rev. Randall Schlecht officiating. Visitation will be from 4 PM until 7 PM Thursday at the Lerud-JohnsonSchuldt Funeral Home with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City with full military honors.
