Mr. Mutchler was born to the late William Isaiah Mutchler and Rebecca Jane (Patton) Mutchler in Oceola. He attended school in Oceola and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1930. Mutchler, 94, of Bucyrus, died at 12:40 p.m., Monday at Fairview Manor following a lengthy illness. Mr. Mutchler was born to the late William Isaiah Mutchler and Rebecca Jane (Patton) Mutchler in Oceola. He attended school in Oceola and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1930. On Dec. 24, 1932, he married Hazel Orelda Wilson, who preceded him in death July 6, 1972. On April 14, 1973, he married Thelma V. (Stoneman) Sellers, who survives. Mr. Mutchler is survived by children JoAnne (Don) Ryland of Bucyrus, William (Judy) Mutchler of Bucyrus, Judy (Ron) Booth of Marengo, and Timothy (Brenda) Mutchler of Bucyrus; a son-in-law, Charles Foos of Marion; 15 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Jean Foos; two grandchildren; brothers Fred, Jessie, Russell and Paul; and sisters Flora Bash, Sylvia Miller, Mary Lust, Goldie Leonard and Ethel Bradstock. Dwight was a lifelong member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church, a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, a 51-year member of Colonel Crawford Post 181 of the American Legion and a charter member of the Crawford County Coon Hunters Club, where he enjoyed coon hunting and searching for mushrooms. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Mr. Mutchler retired as secretary/treasurer of Crawford County Fire Insurance Company, which in now Ohio Mutual. He lived most of his life in this area except for 27 years when he lived in Iberia. Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Home, where the funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Oceola Cemetery with military honors being provided by American Legion Colonel Crawford Post 181. Memorials may be made to Woodlawn U.M. Originally published October 4, 2006 Dwight's Story Dwight L. Mutchler was born March 23, 1912 in the brick house that his grandfather Isaiah built on the Mutchler farm. He was the last child born to William Mutchler and Rebecca Patton. He was named after Dwight L. Moody, a famous evangelist at that time, and was given a middle initial only. His family moved to Oceola in 1913. In 1922, when he was 10, they moved back to the farm. After his graduation from high school in 1930, they moved to a house on Faustina Ave. in Bucyrus. Later, his family moved to East Mansfield, and last to Woodlawn Ave. Dwight started school at Oceola in 1918. The school house had burned so his first grade was spent in the Tod Twp., Hall in Oceola until a new 2-room brick school was built. In 1926, he stayed in Bucyrus with his sister, Mary, to start high school at Bucyrus. The next 3 years , he drove a car to school and graduated in 1930. He was drafted in 1944. Dwight served in WW II from Nov 4, 1944 to Feb. 2, 1946 in the European Theater of Operations with the 4th Armored Div. Here are some interesting recollections from Dwight: When Dwight was small, Jesse lived across the road from his family in Oceola. He had a big potato patch and hired Dwight to plant potatoes. However, he charged Dwight so many pennies a day to work for him. While his family lived in Oceola, his father drove a horse (Jim) and buggy back and forth to the farm where Fred, John, and Mary lived. Often, neighborhood boys in Oceola would turn Jim loose and he would go back to the farm by himself where his father would find him in the stable. During the flu epidemic of WW , Dwight's mother and most of the kids had the old fashioned flu. His father, William, didn't get the flu, he made broth soup with lots of crackers for the entire family. After graduation from high school and the family moved to Bucyrus, his Dad went back and forth to the farm in an automobile. One night, Dwight went driving and hit a train. He could not get home but the car was not in such good shape. His father discovered it in the garage in the morning when he was about to go to the farm.
