Description	:	Dwight Lamoine Winn, age 85, was born July 16, 1929 in Clearwater, Kansas and passed away Monday March 9th 2015 at Howard Twilight Manor Nursing Home. He was the eighth child of Lester Frank and Genevieve (Cox) Winn. He attended school in Osage and Elk counties. He enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1947 as a Seaman Recruit. Read More	Dwight Lamoine Winn, age 85, was born July 16, 1929 in Clearwater, Kansas and passed away Monday March 9th 2015 at Howard Twilight Manor Nursing Home. He was the eighth child of Lester Frank and Genevieve (Cox) Winn. He attended school in Osage and Elk counties. He enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1947 as a Seaman Recruit. During his 20 year Navy career he served on the USS Iowa, USS Brush, USS Nereus, USS Brinkley Bass, USS Helena, USS Bausell and the USS Saint Paul. He served ashore at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois; Naval Station, Kodiak, Alaska; Naval Station, San Diego, California and Naval Support Activity, Danang, Vietnam. He retired from the Navy on December 4, 1967. Dwight and Gleneva (Shanks) Winn were married on August 22, 1951 in Winfield, Kansas. They have two daughters, Marcia Taylor and husband (Larry) and Dianna Deniston and husband (Kevin) all of Scott City, Kansas. Dwight moved his family to Howard, Kansas in July of 1969 where he and Gleneva have continued to reside. They operated the Plaza Grill for one year before Dwight started working for B & H Limestone and Sedan Limestone Company for 20 years retiring in 1991. Dwight was an active member of the Howard community serving as Commander of the American Legion Carter-Rader Post #149 of Howard for several years. He was a very patriotic citizen making sure that the flags were raised and lowered at the Grace Lawn Cemetery for many Memorial Days. He could be called upon by the citizens of Howard for lawn mowing and wood working jobs. Following his "retirement" he kept busy building and refinishing furniture for family, friends and the community. Many of the signs around Howard are his handiwork. One of his favorite hobbies was building carousels which he shared with many people. Dwight accepted Christ as his savior at a Billy Graham crusade in San Diego, California. He was baptized at the Highland Park Baptist Church in San Diego. In Howard he was an active member of the First Baptist Church. In October 2004 he was nominated for and received the "Christ Exemplified Award". Dwight was proud of and enjoyed his family. He was blessed to be grandpa to five grandchildren, Adam and Heather Carver, Ben and Megan Taylor, Christy and Danny Aguiniga, Chad and Mandi Deniston, and Matt and Challie Metzger. He was great grandpa to 17 greats, Mekayla, Taylor, Abbie, Hailey, Dylan, Emma, Brooklyn, McKenzie, Noah, Carson, Brody, Drew, Brynlee, Karys, Drake, Kaeson, and Breckyn. He was also brother, brother-in-law, cousin and uncle to many. He was a great friend to people all over Elk County and beyond. Survivors include his wife Gleneva (Shanks) Winn of the home and two daughters Marcia Taylor and (Larry) and Dianna Deniston and (Kevin), two brothers Bob Winn (Shirley) of Howard and Frank (Myrna) Winn of Bartlesville, OK, five grandchildren and spouses and 17 great grandchildren.
