Westcott Denison Bulletin/Review - Denison IA 51442 04/21/2006 Dwight Shorland Westcott was born on a farm one mile east of Woodbine, Iowa, April 22, 1915, the son of William Shorland and Serena E. Tucker Westcott. His early years were spent on the farm at Woodbine and he received his elementary education at the Merry Brook Country School. On March 1, 1929, the family moved to the farm five miles southwest of Denison, Iowa, that his father had purchased in the fall of 1928. Dwight continued his education at Denison High School from which he was graduated with the class of 1933. During those years Dwight was active in 4-H and was one of 25 4-H members chosen with merits of achievement to attend the National 4-H Club Congress at the International Livestock Show in Chicago, Illinois. Following high school he remained on the farm helping his father during the depression of farm prices. Sears Roebuck Company started a program of providing Agricultural Scholarships in Land Grant Colleges and, after being nominated by the Vocational Agriculture teacher and the County Extension Service Agent, Dwight was one of 25 selected to attend Iowa State College in Ames from which he was graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry in 1941. On September 7, 1941, Dwight was united in marriage with Erma Irene Hulsebus at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children, John and Mary. They made their first home at Adel, Iowa, where Dwight was employed by the Iowa Extension Service and the Dallas County Farm Bureau as County 4-H Club Agent. In 1942, they moved to Oakland, Iowa, where he was employed as County Extension Director of East Pottawattamie County. On March 1, 1947, Dwight went into partnership with his brother Fred on the home place five miles southwest of Denison where he was in charge of their Chester White Purebred Hog operation. On March 1, 1955, Dwight purchased the Denison Redi Mixed Concrete Plant, which he owned and operated until selling it February 1, 1978 and retiring. Throughout the years he owned the Redi Mix Plant. Dwight also enjoyed his hobby of raising cattle. Following retirement they remained in Denison. Throughout his life Dwight was active in his community having served as a 4-H Leader; from 1952, until 1975, he was a member of the County Board of Education serving as Chairman for 18 of those years of which during that time the rural schools were gradually closed forming five districts in the county; as a member of the Crawford County Farm Bureau he served as secretary and president and, for attaining membership goals, he was awarded a trip to Washington D.C. meeting with farm leaders and members of Congress; in 1964 he was elected to the Crawford County Fair Board serving for 26 years, with 12 of those years being spent as secretary-treasurer and fair manager; active in senior affairs, he was elected in 1983 as chairman of the Crawford County Advisory Council and served as vice-president in 1985, and as president in 1986 and 1987, of the Elderbrige Agency that encompassed 20 counties in Iowa being honored by the Governor of Iowa in 1988 with a Certificate of Honor as the outstanding Senior of Iowa. Other memberships Dwight enjoyed through the years include the Masonic Lodge and Kiwanis. Dwight was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees and Financial Committee. It was during the years he served those groups that the new Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary were erected. Both Erma and Dwight served for seven years as sponsors of the Methodist Youth Fellowship while their children were of that age. Erma died January 30, 1989, and Dwight continued to make his home in Denison where he remained active in his church and community as long as his health permitted. In June of 2004 Dwight moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where he had since resided. Dwight died Wednesday morning, April 12, 2006, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 90 years, 11 months and 20 days. Including his parents and his wife, Dwight was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Fred Westcott. Those remaining to cherish his memory include one son and his wife, John and Rose Mary Westcott of Watertown, Connecticut; one daughter and her husband, Mary and Keith Henry of Yorktown, Virginia; three grandchildren, Jessica Henry of Rockville, Maryland; Jonathan Westcott of Watertown, Connecticut and Christopher Westcott of Springfield, Massachusetts; one brother and his wife, Horace and Marie Westcott of Stockton, California; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service included the congregation singing, "Holy, Holy, Holy", "America The Beautiful" and "He Leadeth Me" with Nancy Miles serving as organist. Pallbearers were Richard R. Knowles, Dale Wight, Tedd Bliesman, Mac LaRue, James Beaman and Dr. George Berry. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Following the services the family invited all to return to the church and join them for a luncheon prepared and served by the United Methodist Women. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church Education Fund. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements where at 7:00 p.m., Monday, April 17, 2006, a Masonic Service was held conducted by Sylvan Lodge No. 507, A. F. & A.
