Description	:	Dwight William Gass was born on April 8, 1917, in rural Marion County to Lawrence J. and Nora (Smith) Gass. He was the first person from Marion County drafted and was to serve one year of military training in the Army. World War II started and he served his country for five years. The couple made their home on a farm near Melcher,... Read More	Dwight William Gass was born on April 8, 1917, in rural Marion County to Lawrence J. and Nora (Smith) Gass. He was the first person from Marion County drafted and was to serve one year of military training in the Army. World War II started and he served his country for five years. After returning from the war, Dwight worked in a factory until deciding that farming was in his blood, so he decided to farm for himself. On Jan. 27, 1951, he married Betty Louise Galvin in Melcher. The couple made their home on a farm near Melcher, where they resided until moving to Knoxville in October 1977. Dwight enjoyed farming, working in the garden and fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards and the Chicago Cubs. His greatest joy was his family. While Betty was still working, he began to learn his way around the kitchen. He became an accomplished baker - his specialty was his French silk pie, of which he made many. Dwight's patience was unlimited as he taught several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and even Betty, how to drive. Dwight died on May 15, 2006, at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; brothers, Mervin, Uhlin and Russell Gass and brother-in-law, Richard Sullivan. Survivors include his brother, James Gass (Margaret) of Pleasanton, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Jean Gass of Melcher-Dallas, Bonnie Sullivan of Knoxville and Ruth Ann Galvin of Pleasantville; three brothers-in-law, Galen Galvin and R.D. Galvin, both of Pleasantville and Larry Galvin (Avis) of Sacramento, Calif.; plus many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews and great great-nieces and nephews. His gentle manner, devotion to his family, unwavering honesty and generosity has inspired us all. He left footprints that all of us can follow. We are warmed by the spirit of the man he was, the man we loved, and the man we remember - a gentleman. A scripture service was held on May 18 with Rev. Mark P. Spring as the celebrant. A mass of Christian Burial was held on May 19 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Melcher with Rev. Mark P. Spring as the celebrant. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Melcher.
