Mr. Jones, 91, of Hingham, died at South shore Hospital after a short illness. He joined the fire department in the 1930's before fighting fires was a full-time job in Hingham. He was appointed chaplain in 1940 and presided over funerals, dedications and anything else the community needed. "I've laughed with them and cried with them during the darkest moments." Mr. Jones told the Patriot Ledger in September, when he as named honorary fire chief in recognition of his service. "I thank God for allowing me to stay around this long to see them succeed and enjoy life. They're a great bunch of fellows." Selectmen continued to appoint him a special police officer every year in appreciation for his service years ago, when he walked a patrol beat in Hingham Square to fill in for men serving in World War II. Mr Jones became a lay reader at Trinity Episcopal Church in Weymouth. He owned Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel in Hingham for 50 years, retiring 20 years ago. He recently retired after serving 30 years as a justice of the peace, during which time he performed more than 3,000 marriages. Born on Christmas Day in 1914, he was a lifelong Hingham resident and believed his lineage went back seven generations in Hingham. He was a member of Oil Colony Masonic Lodge and held several Masonic Offices. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Geraldine C. (Hatch) Jones; a son Edward G. Jones of Hingham; A daughter, Blanche L. Whitman of Cohasset; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Patriot Ledger April 10, 2006
