Description	:	Pauline "Polly" Philips McCart, 93, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 14, 2006 at her daughter's home in Muncie, IN. Pauline was born March 5, 1913 to W.L. and Blanche (Theobald) Philips in West Union, IA. She graduated from West Union High School in 1930, and attended St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester, MN, graduating in 1939. With the outbreak of World War... Read More	Pauline "Polly" Philips McCart, 93, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 14, 2006 at her daughter's home in Muncie, IN. Pauline was born March 5, 1913 to W.L. and Blanche (Theobald) Philips in West Union, IA. She graduated from West Union High School in 1930, and attended St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester, MN, graduating in 1939. Pauline worked for two years as a head nurse in the Mayo Clinic in Rochester before relocating to Seattle, WA where she continued her nursing career at Virginia Mason Hospital. With the outbreak of World War II, Pauline joined the Army Nurse Corps, serving with the 50th General Hospital. She was initially stationed at Camp Carson, CO before being deployed to Europe. She arrived at Omaha Beach on D-Day to care for the wounded, earning three Bronze Battle Stars for her work. Following the war, she attended the University of Iowa, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in 1954. It was here she met Earl J. McCart of Sioux Falls. They were married on April 18, 1949 in Carruthersville, MO. After working for four years in public health services, Polly and Earl moved to Sioux Falls. She worked at the Presentation School of Nursing and McKennan Hospital from 1956-1977, serving first as the Medical-Surgical nursing instructor, and later as the Assistant Director of the Presentation School of Nursing at McKennan Hospital. Following the school's closure, she was named Director of Education for the hospital. In this position, Polly collaborated with state and local colleges to integrate nursing and related professions into the hospital. Polly was active in organizations related to nursing. She way appointed by the Governor to the South Dakota Board of Nursing from 1972-1975, during which she served a term as President. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Sioux Falls Visiting Nurse Association, and held several leadership positions in the South Dakota Nurses Association. After they retired, Polly and Earl spent the winters at the Tip-o-Texas Park in Pharr, TX, where she remained active in community service including serving as a reading tutor and mentor for Spanish speaking elementary school children. Earl died March 13, 2003. Polly is survived by her two daughters: Dr. Mary Kay (Dr. James) Cramer of Corbin, KY, and Martha (Dr. Julius) Silvidi of Muncie, IN; three grandchildren: Anthony, Michael, and Liliana Silvidi; and one sister: Mary Ann Walton of Yankton, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl J. McCart, and two brothers, Theobald "Speed" Philips of West Union, IA, and Thomas E. Philips of Decorah, IA. Visitation will be Wednesday the 20th, at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home with a Scripture Vigil at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday the 21st, 1:00 PM, at Christ the King Church, with burial following at St. Michael Cemetery. A scholarship fund is being established in Pauline?s name for students interested in the nursing profession.
