Eari is found in the 1900 Census for Wapello County, at the age of 13. Also living in the household is her mother Mary Gilbert, 38, divorced; and the following siblings: May, age 22; Esther, age 17; Edwin, age 11; and Lucy, Age 7. Eari married John Swearingen on November 30, 1904, in Ottumwa. Her name is shown on the marriage record as Carrie, and his name is shown as John H. Swearingen. John's full name was John Henry Olden Swearingen. It appears that he usually went by Olden, but occasionally I have seen John H. in the records. Eari's death record at the Wapello County Court House shows that she was the daughter of Eaton and Mary Huffman [sic] Gilbert. Eari's occupation was a canvasser. She died of tuberculosis. John Olden and Eari had one son, Edwin Swearingen. Note - One obituary states that she died at 830 West Mechanic Street, and the other states that she died at 839 Mechanic street. I have transcribed them as written. --------------- Obituary From Ottumwa Courier, Thursday, September 21, 1911: DEATHS SWEARINGEN–Thursday morning, Sept. 21, 1911, at 3:40 o'clock at the home of her mother, Mrs. Mary Gilbert, 830 West Mechanic street, Eari Gilbert Swearingen, wife of Olton [sic] Swearingen, age 24 years. The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the parental home, conducted by Rev. B.F. Patt, pastor of the First Baptist church. Interment will be made in the Shaul cemetery. --------------- Obituary From Ottumwa Daily Review, Thursday, September 21, 1911: Eari Gilbert Swearingen, 839 Mechanic street, was born January 24, 1887, and died at 3:40 this morning. She is survived by her husband and one son. Funeral will be conducted from the residence Saturday afternoon by Rev. Patt of the First Baptist church. Interment at the Shaul cemetery.
