Tenley, 89 a resident of Leavenworth for the past 58 years, died Wednesday April 22, 2003 at his home in Leavenworth. He was born on January 13, 1914 to Harry S. and Murtle (Connel) Tenley at Toledo, Ohio. He was raised and educated at Flint, Michigan where he graduated from Central High School in 1932. After an education in drafting and Tools Die at General Motors Tech, Scotty went to work designing and marketing parts for automobiles for ten years. In 1936, he met and married his first wife Marie Lovejo; soon thereafter their daughters Kip, Polly, and Juanita were born. During WWII, Scotty was a civilian Tank Engineer and was burned badly in 1943 in an experimental tank accident. After a year in the hospital he began to walk again, divorced and later met and married his second wife Virginia Steiner at Flint, Michigan on January 20, 1947. (Virginia was raised in Leavenworth in the 1920's). They went on to have two sons Skeeter and Terry and two daughters, Cynthia and Virginia. In 1948, he moved to Washington and started a successful business in Kennewick, WA. where he sold mobile homes to post-war families working on the hydroelectric dam and Hanford test ground in Richland, WA. The business was called Freedom Trailer Sales. Scotty retired in 1962. In 1951, the Tenley's bought Hank Brown's place in Leavenworth and made it their summer home until 1965 at which time it became their permanent residence. Mr. Tenley was very active in silver mining for years in Spokane until 1994. He was also involved with the Masonic Lodge and the Boy Scouts as an assistant Scout Master in the Tri-Cities area for over ten years in the fifties and sixties. Scotty will be remembered for his wonderful ability to communicate and joke with most everyone who ever met him. Survivors include two sons, Earl A. "Skeeter" Tenley Jr. of Seattle and Terry D. Tenley of Camino, California; daughters, Cynthia Vickery of Athena, Oregon, Virginia McKinney of Leavenworth, Kip Brown of Leavenworth, Polly Lange of Los Angeles, California and Juanita Griego of Albuquerque, New Mexico. 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia in 1992, a brother, William in 1994 and a grandson Robert Lange in 1996. A Funeral Service of Commemoration to celebrate the life of Earl A. "Scotty" Tenley will be held on Thursday May 1, 2003 at 1:00 pm at the Leavenworth Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Walt Goehner officiating; interment at the Mt. View Cemetery. For those friends that wish, memorials may be made in Scotty's name to the Upper Valley Christian School. Ward's Funeral Chapel of Leavenworth is handling the arrangements.
