Earl Charles Slovek was born on the family ranch, February 28, 1923, the son of John & Emma (Buchholz) Slovek. He attended eight years of grade school near their home. He lived and worked at home and worked for several area ranchers until 1948. In 1948, he moved to his present location, formerly the Ed Slovek place, where he started farming and ranching for himself. On September 26, 1953, Earl married a Haakon County school teacher by the name of Helen Harnisch. The double wedding ceremony was held in Wall, along with her sister Margaret Harnisch and John Buchholz. They made their home on the ranch all their married life. Helen taught school for twenty-one years while Earl worked on the ranch. Helen retired from teaching in 1969, and from 1969 until 2004, Earl and Helen worked side by side on the ranch raising cattle, which were his pride and joy. In 2004, they sold their cattle and began leasing their land to their son, but continued to reside on the ranch, the place Earl has called home for over sixty years. Earl enjoyed giving the grandkids pickup, tractor, horse, and 4-wheeler rides. He also loved to play cards, especially pitch, with their friends and neighbors. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of over 55 years, Helen Slovek; one son Bill Slovek and his wife Pennie of Philip; three grandchildren Belinda Mitchell and her husband Brandon of Kadoka, Brock Slovek and Bo Slovek of Philip; one sister Bonnie Walters of Orange County, California; and a host of other relatives and friends. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers Everett, Frank, Herb, and John "Bud" Slovek; and one sister Frances O'Connell. Visitation was held 3-5 p.m. on Friday, December 26, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the hall on Saturday. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating. Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery, Philip. A memorial is established.
