Born March 7, 1933, in Mapleton, Iowa, Earl DeWayne Muckey was the son of Harvey Orlando and Minnie (Schuett) Muckey. He attended Ida Grove schools until 1953. Born March 7, 1933, in Mapleton, Iowa, Earl DeWayne Muckey was the son of Harvey Orlando and Minnie (Schuett) Muckey. He attended Ida Grove schools until 1953. While still a high school student, Earl was active in the United States National Guard as an ambulance orderly. He received an honorable discharge in 1950. Earl was employed in several capacities over the years, including as a waiter at Koons Bakery, as a merry-g0-round and Ferris wheel operator for Sonny-Meyers Amusements, and as a cook at the Orchid Club in Ida Grove. In 1965, Earl became bookkeeper for the Co-op, a position he held until retiring in 1983. Earl met his wife, Mona Estes, in St. Joseph, MO. They married in 1960, and made their home in Ida Grove in 1963. Mona passed away in 1994. Earl was an active member of the Ida Grove City Council for the last 24 years. He was a strong supporter of organized youth sports and enjoyed announcing tournament games for the summer rec program. He was instrumental in the development of the Heritage Days celebration in Ida Grove (1978) and also helped raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, holding carnivals and manning a fish bowl with his wife during their annual telethon. Because of his ongoing volunteer work within the community, Earl was honored with the Governor's Leadership Award in 1986. Earl was an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed traveling and meeting new people with his dance band, "The Driftwoods," from 1978 to 1982. When Earl was able, he enjoyed photography, fishing, and attending his grandchildren's activities. He kept himself busy during his retirement years with crafts and woodworking projets, even after health concerns caused him to become a resident of Morningside Rehab and Care Center in 1998. Survivors include his mother, Minnie Muckey of Ida Grove, 3 children and their spouses, Jolene and Todd Jepsen of Ida Grove; Roger and Kristi Muckey of Euless, Tx.; and Curtis and Gina Muckey of Galva, Iowa; 7 grandchlldren, Erin and Evan Lawhead, Emily and Jacob Muckey, Tiffany Boeckman, and Shawna and Taylor Muckey; 2 sisters and their spouses, Lois and Charles Sykes of Ida Grove; Marian and Dennis Paulsen of Colorado Springs, CO.; and a brother and his wife, Dale and Carol Muckey of Colorado Springs, CO. In addition to his wife, Earl was preceded in death by his father, paternal grandparents Henry and Lennie; and maternal grandparents John and Alvena Schuett.
