Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 137, of Dyersville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m. He was born on Feb. 25, 1929, in Earlville, Iowa, son of Joseph G. and Edna (Scovel) Billmeyer. He married Patricia Ann Esch on April 14, 1956, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville; she preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2008. They lived in Dyersville until 1967, then moved to Dubuque. Earl was an Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean conflict. He worked as a consumer service coordinator for Interstate Power Co., retiring in 1992. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dyersville, volunteered on the fire department and was a member of American Legion Post 137, of Dyersville, and Homebuilders. He also was a Junior Achievement Advisor and Cub Scout leader. Earl loved raising Christmas trees on "Grampa's Tree Farm," near Sandy Hook Road in Wisconsin, and wintering in Pharr, Texas. He was a devoted husband, father and grampa. He loved spending time with his family, and he always had a smile on his face. Surviving are his children, Ron (Chris) Billmeyer and Diane "De De" (Dennis Schroeder) Jones, both of Dubuque, Tim (Linda) Billmeyer, of Marion, Iowa, Beth (Jeff) McMullen and Joe (Helen Blatz) Billmeyer, both of Dubuque; 14 grandchildren, Jason, Josh (Kelli), Carisa (Drew Noel), Tyler, Alyssa, Thomas and Tate Billmeyer, John (Tonya) Sullivan, Nicole (Benny Kluesner) Basalyga, Madison and Alex McMullen, Shawn and Craig Splinter and Bailey Blatz; and 6 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Addison Sullivan, Jaiden Basalyga, Lindsay, Abby and Chris Kluesner. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Billmeyer; a daughter-in-law, Kim (Kehoe) Billmeyer, a son-in-law, Keith Jones; a sister, Hazel Powell; and brother, Donald Billmeyer. In lieu of flowers, an Earl F. Billmeyer Memorial Fund has been established. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Ann, Lynn and Jenny for their exceptional care and kindness they gave to Earl, also a very special thank-you to his loving caregivers, De De and Dennis for being so devoted in caring for Earl.
