It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Earl Fabian Nilsson, our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, resident of Grande Prairie and Grovedale, who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the age of 91 years. Born in Westerose, Alberta, Earl spent his childhood in the Westerose and Battle Lake area. At 13 he began working on farms with threshing crews and later in sawmills. He served with the Canadian Forestry Corps in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe from 1942 – 1946. In 1947, Earl and Phil formed Nilsson Brothers Limited and headed to the Grande Prairie area. They operated sawmill and logging operations in Crooked Creek, Big Mountain and the Kakwa areas. They also built logging roads south of Grande Prairie, many of which still exist. On November 2, 1952, he married his wife, Gertie and began a new chapter in his life which lasted 60 years. He and Phil bought a farm in the Flying Shot area in 1954 and relocated their parents there. In 1961, Earl got homestead land in Grovedale. He cleared and broke the land as well as built a new home for his family. From 1968 to 1974 the sawmill was operated year-round at Grovedale. At 53, Earl received his journeyman welding ticket and began working at the plywood plant. He worked there for nearly ten years before retiring to farm fulltime. Earl farmed until last year. Earl leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Gertie, his daughters Sandra, Dorothy (Julien) Leduc and their children James and Heidi (Jeremy); his sons Peter and his children Peggy, and Cory; and David (Pat); his brothers Phil and George; sisters Vera (Lloyd) Hansen and Olive (Joe) Kuntz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Hjalmer and Harriet Nilsson; his brothers Ivan, Darren and his wife Tillie, Glen and Cecil and his wife Bernice; parents in-law Karl and Rosalina Kuntz; Paul and Betty Kuntz, Bertha and Felix Pitchko and Con and Paulina Rubie. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 7:00pm at Oliver’s Grande Prairie Funeral Chapel (10005 107 Ave). Funeral services to celebrate Earl’s life and legacy will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 1:00pm at the Grande Prairie Alliance Church (15502 102 St.), with interment to follow at the Grovedale Cemetery. A lunch and fellowship time will follow at the Grovedale Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Grande Prairie Alliance Church Building Fund (15502 102 St.), or to a charity of one’s choice *obituary published in Grande Prairie Herald Tribune
