Pastor Bill Serr officiated with interment in the Graceland Cemetery of Burke, SD. Earl Glen Sieh was born on Dec. 29, 1921 to George and Anna (Becker) Sieh on the family farm west of Naper, Nebr. He attended country school through the 8th grade. He played baseball with the Naper team for several years. He helped his dad with the farm work and also worked for several other farmers in the area before he was called to serve in the Army from Oct 1942 - Jan 1946. He was in World War II and was stationed in several European countries where he was a sargeant. He was an army tank driver and served with the 735th Tank BN. He didn't talk about his Army days very much, he was just very glad to be back home. Although he did share that he did try to locate his brother, Johnny, when they were both stationed in England at the same time, but didn't succeed. He and his troops very much appreciated the German families who befriended them and made them raised doughnuts. A very hard time for him was on guard duty on Christmas Eve and the song "White Christmas" being played. After returning home from the Army, he and his brother, Johnny, farmed the family farm for two years. He married Darlene Mayer on March 26, 1948. Later, he and Darlene became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jamison, NE. They have belonged to this church for their entire married life of 60 years. Earl was an elder for many years and was always ready to help with any work to improve the church building. Earl attended church faithfully until he developed health problems. He was also a former member of the Naper and Burke VFW. He always liked to play cards with the family and friends and liked to watch football and baseball, especially the Braves. He was very good at fixing his machinery on the farm, and things in their home. He did carpenter work and did a lot of remodeling on their house. They farmed the family farm for 41 1/2 years and retired to Burke in Oct. of 1989. Because of failing health, Earl became a resident at TLC (assisted living) in Burke, Nov. 2006. On July 7, 2008, he and Darlene moved to Wayne, NE to live with and be cared for by their daughter, Lynette and son-in-law Dick. Earl was diagnosed with cancer last year. He never complained and was a quiet fighter. With hospice care, he passed away very peacefully in the Carmichael home on Oct. 15, 2008 at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 16 days. Earl was definitely a family man and would mention, occasionally how proud he was of all of them and was always glad to hame them come to visit. He took great pride in his farming and livestock operation. He leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years, Darlene; a daughter and son (and spouses); four grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brothers Duane (Marilyn) Sieh, Naper, NE, Marlo (Darlene) Sieh, Creston, IA, and sister-in-law Lucille Sieh of Naper, NE; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna Sieh, sisters, Hilda Tietgen, June Smith and Fern Sondgeroth; brother, Johnny Sieh, brother-in-laws: Hans Tietgen, Clayton Smith and Ray Sondgeroth.
