When he was a small boy he moved with his parents to a farm in Alder. He grew up in the Valley and being a hard working, dependable young man, was held in high esteem. Before he attained his majority, he inlisted in the Navy and followed the sea for 22months. He was they discharged and returned to his home. Shortly after the war borke out he joined the reserves and served one year after which he again returned to his home, but was ready for call at any time. This enlistment expired in November, 1927 when he recieved his final discharge. He was married on July 23, 1922 to Ida Elser of Sheridan and they had one daughter, Maralee. Earl lived in Alder and helped his father with this ranch and other property at Lyon in the Upper Madison. Early in 1928, he moved to the Dauterman ranch on the Madison. In August, 1928, Earl came from the Madison ranch to Alder to help his father in haying. One afternoon, he was on a stack with Charles Moran when a rain shower came up. There were not many clouds but out of one came a single bolt of lighting that killed Earl. Charles Mpran was only shightly dazed but when he turned to talk to Earl he saw him fall from the hay stack. He had been killed instantly. Besides his wife and small daughter. Earl was survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Dauterman; his brother Joe; sister Mrs. Grant Connor of Thompson Falls; Mrs. W.J. Kennedy of Harlowton and Marjorie Dauterman of Alder. Fueral service were held by Rev. Fr. Delane at the church in Laurin followed by a public services in the Alder Hall, which was in charge of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Burial was in the Sheridan Cemetery. Earl Dauterman was Thrity-one years old at the time of his death. Ida Elser was born January 11, 1902 at the Ruby Mountain ranch, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Elser and a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Bock, pioneers of the 1860's. She had an identical twin sister, Ina. They attended school in Sheridaan from the first grade throught high school, graduating with a class of six girls in 1919 She married Earl Dauterman on July 23, 1922 and they had one child, Maralee. After Earl's death in 1928 she and her young daughter moved to Butte where she found employment. She became acquainted with Donal Dibble and later married him. He held a Federal position and was transferred to California. On March 20, 1932, Ida died in San Luis Obispo, California after a very brief illness of a streptococcus infection. She was survived by her husband, her nine year old daughter, Maralee Dauterman; a twin sisster, Mrs. Ina McManus; four brother; Glenn and Ray Elser of Sheridan; Archie on Laurin and Roy of Rigby, Idaho. After Ida's death, her daughter Maralee went to live with her aunt and uncle, Ina and Joe McManus, where she stayed until 1940. They had no children and raised her as their daughter. Maralee is an attorney and has lived in the Los Angeles area for thirty-six years.
