Services were held Wednesday, July 7, at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. Reverend Paul Hansen and the Reverend Roy Brown officiated. Visitation was held at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Mr. Slife was born October 22, 1898, in Dedham, IA, the son of Melvin and Capitola Slife. He moved with his family to Hawarden in 1912 after living in Sioux Falls a few years. He graduated from high school in Hawarden in 1917 where he was an outstanding member of the track team, setting several records which stood for more than 20 years. He married Beatrice Venard February 25, 1919, in Hawarden and she died in March of 1953. He married Edith C. Aldrich August 14, 1954, in Hawarden. Mr. Slife was active in community affairs serving as City Treasurer for 27 years, was a 50 year member of the Chamber of Commerce where he was Secretary and President, was a charter member and director of the Hawarden Economic Development Corporation, member and President of the Sioux County Bankers Association, charter member and trustee of Sioux Empire College, member and President of the Rotary Club, chairman of the Medical Committee that enlarged the hospital, chairman of the first two all school reunions held in 1977 and 1982 and a member of the Methodist Church for over 75 years, holding every office a lay member can hold, including treasurer for more than 50 years. he started his banking career with the Farmers State Bank on March 4, 1918, only months after the bank was organized and opened for business. On March 4 of this year he notched 75 years of continuous association with the bank and was one of the top few in Iowa in terms of longevity as recorded by the Iowa Bankers Association. After the President of the United States closed all banks in 1933, he authored a plan to restructure the bank which was submitted to and approved by the State Department of Banking and pursuant to that all depositors were paid in full. One of his most cherished activities was that of a volunteer U.S. Weather Bureau observer, a job he held for nearly 67 years. A few weeks ago the Weather Bureau honored him with the prestigious Albert J. Meyer award at a ceremony attended by several Weather Bureau people and members of his family and the community. He had previously received several other weather service awards. It was said that he was the great granddaddy of Iowa Weather Observers having served longer than anyone. He is survived by his wife, Edith, two sons and their wives, Earl, Jr. and LaVonne of Hawarden, Harry and Polly of Cedar Falls, nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
