Description	:	Earnest Donald "Don" Cook, passed away peacefully, of natural causes, with his family by his side Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, Nebraska. Don was born in Ainsworth, Nebraska on April 14, 1924, the son of Earl and Mildred (Osborne) Cook. Following his education, Don served our country during World War II in the 859th Signal Battalion; entering the war on Omaha Beach, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, and the "White Winter" battle. He was wounded in Liege, Belgium (recovered in England), and eventually traveled to the South Pacific where he shot coconuts out of the... Read More	Earnest Donald "Don" Cook, passed away peacefully, of natural causes, with his family by his side Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, Nebraska. Don was born in Ainsworth, Nebraska on April 14, 1924, the son of Earl and Mildred (Osborne) Cook. Following his education, Don served our country during World War II in the 859th Signal Battalion; entering the war on Omaha Beach, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, and the "White Winter" battle. He was wounded in Liege, Belgium (recovered in England), and eventually traveled to the South Pacific where he shot coconuts out of the trees and ate bananas. After his honorable discharge, Don returned to Nebraska. He served in the Norfolk (NE.) Police Department for several years. Don married Della Jean Reimers June 1, 1947; they were married 66 years. Don retired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a Locomotive Engineer. He enjoyed fishing, designing and producing fishing lures and products, gemology and raising apples in his 26-tree orchard. His last career turned into a labor of love where the golf clubs he produced were given to our military veterans across the United States. He was a life member of the American Legion, Post 16 and VFW Post 1644. Don is survived by: wife, Della Jean Cook of Norfolk, Nebraska; children, Mary Williams of Denton, Texas, Jerry and Sharon Cook of Indianapolis, Indiana, Barbara and Frank McGuire of Salisbury, North Carolina and Donna and Randy Slobodny of Norfolk, Nebraska; 9 grandchildren: 12 great grandchildren; brother Kenneth and Joy Cook of Idaho and a host of family and friends. Don is preceded in death by: parents, Mildred and Earl Cook and brother, Bob Cook. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Norfolk, Nebraska, with Military Rites being conducted by the Nebraska National Guard, American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 1644.
