He served two terms as Wayne county sheriff from 1904 to 1909 later moving back to the farm where he remained until a few years ago when he and Mrs. Merrick moved to Corydon. He is survived by his wife and 11 children of whom all were with him during his last illness except one daughter, Mrs. Cora Seward, of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The other surviving children are Floyd, Dr. R. E., and Laurence Merrick of Corydon, Mrs. T. M. (Clara) Thompson, Mrs. Hazel Wendt, Miss Grace Merrick and Harold Merrick of Washington, D. C., Wayne Merrick of New York City, Mrs. William (Nell) Paisley of Alexandria, Va., and Mrs. M. A.V. (Wilma) Smith of Albuquerque, N. Mex., and a number of grand children. Funeral services will be held at the Wolf funeral home Friday at 2:00 p.m. with burial at Allerton. Corydon Times Republican Aug. 15, 1946 Obituary Ebenezer Cole Merrick, youngest son of six children of George Merrick and Betsy Antoinette Kelley, was born on a farm northeast of Farmington, Iowa, on Feb. 22, 1856. He passed away at his home in Corydon, Iowa, on Aug. 6, 1946, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 16 days. Mr. Merrick's parents were pioneer residents of Putnam county, New York, prior to moving to Lee county, Iowa, in 1853. He was their only child to be born in Iowa. He received his early education in the schools of Lee county, Iowa, and later was graduated from the Pilot Grove Academy which was located near Farmington, Iowa. Mr. Merrick was married on Sept. 25, 1881, to Lillie May Viers, in Putnam county, Mo. And took his bride to Wayne county, Iowa, where they continued to make their home. His entire lifetime was devoted to farming except for the period 1904 to 1909, when he served as sheriff of Wayne county, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Merrick were the parents of thirteen children, two of whom died in infancy. Surviving are five sons and six daughters; Floyd, Dr. Ralph E., and Lawrence of Corydon, Iowa; Wayne of New York City, N. Y., Mrs. Cora Seward of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Clara Thompson, Mrs. Hazel Wendt, Miss Grace Merrick, and Harold E. of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Manila Paisley of Alexandria, Va., and Mrs. Wilma Smith of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Also surviving are twenty grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon, Aug. 8, at 2 o'clock at the Wolf funeral home, conducted by Dr. F. C. Edwards. Pallbearers were: Russell Kaster, William Lutz, Joseph Boyer, J. C. Leon Merrick, Dwight Levis and Alvaro Shriver. Flower bearers were Mrs. G. P West and Mrs. R. J. Brown. Interment was in the Allerton cemetery.
