Birth also listed as Nov. 23, 1812. --------------------- Ebenezer Comstock was born in Albany, New York on November 23, in 1812, 1813 or 1815, the son of Amos “Acey” and Mary “Polly” (Cronin) Comstock. (His gravestone has a birth year of 1815, but most of the census data suggests 1813). He was married to Jane Elizabeth (Lockwood) in 1836, at the East Greenbush Church in New York. It is believed that their first two children were born in New York, and that the family had moved to Michigan by the time their third child was born in 1846. Ebenezer and Jane and their four sons and two daughters, were the first “permanent” white settlers in Calhoun County, Iowa. In April of 1854 Ebenezer had brought his family as far west as the Coon River Valley, and located a claim just west of the present town of Lake City, in Calhoun County.. It was there that he built the first cabin in the county, a cabin to which many of the earliest settlers later fled upon hearing of the Spirit Lake Massacre. According to information reported in the Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Iowa, by A.T. Andreas, printed in 1875, Ebenezer had to go to Des Moines (then called Fort Des Moines) for his provisions and mail, a distance of 85 miles. On March 17, 1856, Ebenezer bought the northeast quarter and the southwest quarter of section nineteen in Corwin township, Ida County, IA, purchased at $1.25 an acre. After selling the Lake City claim, the Comstock’s headed their ox-drawn wagon west in search of their half section of bottomland fronted by the Maple River, arriving in April or early May of 1856. According to Dr. Moorehead, Ebenezer brought $3,000 in gold with him, but gold would not buy everything that first winter. “The winter of 1856 and ’57 was the coldest ever known in Iowa. The snow was so deep that travel was suspended,” Moorehead wrote. Their children at that time were Lyman, age 18; Amos, age 13; George, age 10; John, age 7; Mary Jane (Comstock) Sykes, who had been born in Marcellus, MI in 1851, and Harriet Elizabeth, who was born in 1853. A set of twins, Rosette and Theresa, were born in Iowa in 1856 and may have died as infants, and a daughter, Henrietta (Comstock) Wright, was born in Ida County in 1858. Four years after his arrival in Ida County, “Squire” Comstock, as he had come to be known, performed the first marriage in the county between Mary Bohemia, who had come with the Moorehead family, and Henry Cleveland. Jane Elizabeth died February 21, 1866, at the age of 44 and is buried in the “Settlers Cemetery” in the Moorehead Pioneer Park in Ida Grove. In 1867 Ebenezer married a second time, to a widowed woman, Mary (Waterman) Hastings. Mary had a young daughter, Sybil, from her first marriage, and she and Ebenezer had two or three more children, including Ebenezer, Jr. “Eby", born in 1869 and Rhuamy, born in 1872. Mary passed away in 1875, just two month shy of her fortieth birthday. In the 1880 census sixty-seven year old Ebenezer was living in Coon Valley Township, Sac County, Iowa with his 11 year old son, Ebenezer, Jr. At some point, Ebenezer and Ebenezer, Jr. moved to Nebraska. Ebenezer died in Ponca, Dixon County, NE in 1895 and is buried in the Concord Cemetery. -------------------------
