Description	:	At the age of fourteen he went to live with Samuel Cummings, the owner of the mills at Smith Village, where he remained two years and then enlisted as fifer, with his uncle Daniel Foster, in the company of Capt. James Carr for the term of three years. He was stationed at Ticonderoga, but on the retreat from Burgoyne at the battle of Hubbardton he was wounded and taken prisoner. He, however, escaped in a few weeks and returned home. Recovering from his wounds, he returned and served the remainder of his time under Gen. Sullivan against the Indians in the Genesee country. He wrote a narrative of his army experience, the demand for which was sufficient to cause the issue of four editions, and in one edition the story was rendered in verse. He bought the mills of his father-in-law, which he managed for a considerable period, and in his later years he was occupied in the manufacture of trunks. He was one of the original members of the Baptist church of the town.
