Mr. Newell has been in failing health for more than a year and a few days ago he was put to bed by his physician. His family thought he was improving, and no doubt he was until Thursday morning when he developed pneumonia. His condition grew rapidly worse and for three days his family had hourly expected the end. He was born March 10, 1860, the son of Ebenezer Butterfield Newell and Elizabeth Marlow Newell. His paternal grandfather was Ebenezer Francis Newell, who with his young wife, Fannie Butterfield, left his home in South Paris, Vermont, and came to Horry County, to become one of the first missionary Methodist circuit riders in that part of the country. One of the churches he founded was Muddy Creek Methodist Church, near Johnsonville, which was later called Ebenezer church in honor of its founder. It was almost in the shadow of this church, while war clouds hovered over the South, that the grandson was born, and it was here that he spent his childhood days. The death of his father while he was a child and the helpless condition of his widowed mother who had lost what she had in the war denied the grandson the education and the opportunities that his grandfather and his father had had. But from them he had inherited the sturdy qualities that constitute a wholesome manhood. He became his mother's dependent and a bulwark in the church. When he later married Eluiula Simmons and moved to his own home nearer old Johnsonville Church he was for many years the superintendent of the Sunday school. He "and his house served the Lord." In his home the observance of the Sabbath was one of the strictest rules, and unless sickness or emergency required it no fire was kindled in his kitchen stove on that day. He was married twice, first to Eulalia Simmons, who bore six children for him. His second marriage was to Miss Hester Dennis and to this union were born six children. He strove to give these twelve children the advantages he could not have himself. They were each sent through high school and aided and encouraged as they pursued their college courses. He is survived by his widow and ten children as follows: Norvell N. Newell, of Monks Corner, The Rev. S. D. Newell of Holly Hill, J. M. Newell of Hemingway, E. B. Newell, Jr. of 49 Laurens St., Charleaton, Mrs J. F. Poston of Kingsburg, Mrs. C. P. McTeer of Whitehall and the Misses Lillian, Lottie and Sara Newell of Johnsonville: Joseph P. Newell of Hemingway is his brother. He also leaves twenty-two grandchildren. Joseph Durant Newell, who was instantly killed in an explosion at Lancaster recently was his second son.
