Smith, veteran railroad conductor, died in St. Joseph’s hospital at Omaha last Sunday afternoon. His health had not been good for some years, but he was bedfast only a week before his death came. His condition was such last week that it was thought advisable to take him to Omaha, but nothing could be done for him there. The body was brought to Columbus Monday evening and funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fr. Gratain, of St. Bonaventure’s church at the Gass chapel Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock. Mr. Smith was born in Elmira, N.Y., October 29, 1855. He went from there to Illinois with his parents in the ‘60s, and then moved to Creston, Ia., in 1873. There he went in railroading on the Burlington and he took his first freight train as a conductor when he was 22 years old. He was dubbed “the boy conductor” by the other railroad men. Several years later he became a conductor for the Union Pacific, running between Omaha and North Platte, with headquarters in Omaha. About twenty years ago he went west. Where he was with the Union Pacific for some years at Cheyenne, Wyo., and at North Platte. He spent one year as a conductor on the Southern Pacific, during which time he resided at Trinidad, Colo. He came to Columbus early in 1904 and later went to work again for the Union Pacific in the local yards. For the last ten years he has been serving as an extra conductor in both freight and passenger service. About thirty-one years ago Mr. Smith and Miss Irene Moomaw were married at Sidney, Ia. She passed away at North Platte seventeen years ago. Two children were born to them, a son and a daughter. They are Claude Smith, who has been railroading in Minnesota, and Mrs. W. N. Burton, of Past, Calif. On October 22, 1902, Mr. Smith married Miss Celia R. Madden, of Denver, Colo., who survives him. He also leaves a sister, Ms. Theo. Sess, of Denver, and three nephews, Jay Smith, of Omaha; Eber Smith, who is in the aviation service in Texas, and Frank Smith, of Oakland, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Smith were here from Omaha to attend the funeral. Others here from a distance were Mrs. Smith’s brother, John J. Madden, of Fairbury, and her brother-in-law, Frank Varley, of Omaha. Mr. Smith was for many years a member of the Order of Railway Conductors.
