Shell was born near Weston in Platt county, Missouri, March 11th, 1857 and died near Skidmore, Nodaway county, Missouri, October 15th, 1919, being 62 years, seven months and 4 days old at the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Miss Cora Mitchell in March 1884, to which union there were born four children, three daughters and one son, all of whom are still living. When a young man he confessed his faith in Christ and became a member of the Christian Church, in which he remained a devout member till the day of his death. Some years since the Christian Church effected an organization in Skidmore in which he became a charter member, thus he has been acquainted with the entire movement in this locality from its very inception. The greater part of his life has been spent in Nodaway county, he has witnessed much of its growth and development through the years. He has always discharged faithfully and well the duties devolving upon him as a citizen, neighbor, and Christian. As a husband and father, he was kind, loving and indulgent. Ill health had not been his portion; he had not been made to endure protracted suffering; he had only been indisposed to some extent, which was not thought to be of a very serious nature. His death came as a bolt from a clear sky. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, he was stricken and passed on from the scenes of men to enter upon his reward. He is survived by the wife, who was his faithful and tender companion along life's way for thirty-five years, and the four children: Mesdames Gertrude Loucks, Lora Twaddle and Floyd Shell of Skidmore and Mrs. Grace Mealey of Olathe, Colo. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Sarah Shell, who is now past ninety years of age; one sister Mrs. Anna Jones of Skidmore and three brothers, O.L. Shell of Maryville, Charlie Shell of Hopkins, and Fred Shell of Skidmore. Many are the friends and neighbors who are mourning with those who are bowed down with grief, striving to share if possible the burden of sorrow."
