MILLER TUESDAY Lifelong Resident of County Buried at Cantril Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Edgar G. Miller, 49, owner of the Manning hotel in Keosauqua, who died Monday morning of a bullet wound which Coroner Harold Catcott said was self inflicted. The widely known hotel-café operator was a lifelong resident of Van Buren county and his services were attended by one of the largest gatherings in a number of years. Coroner Catcott, in ruling an inquest would not be necessary, said that apparently Miller shot himself in the temple with a .22 caliber revolver about 10 p.m. Sunday. He was rushed to Memorial hospital where he died shortly after midnight. Friends could explain no motive for the hotel operator’s actions. Miller was known throughout the entire southeastern Iowa area through his constant service in public life. He operated restaurants at various communities before entering the hotel business here about nine years ago. The coffee shop here has become one of the area’s most popular eating places. It is not unusual to have dinner guests from 50 and 75 miles away. On Mother’s day more than 250 persons were served. This department of the hotel has closed each Sunday afternoon for the balance of the day and similar action was taken Sunday. Miller was born near Mt. Sterling, on June 11, 1902. He was the youngest of three children, the son of William and Anna Kerr Miller. He attended Van Buren county schools and practically all of his life was spent in the county. He was a member of the Masonic order, the Elks lodge and the Cantril Methodist church. During the years he has served in many civic and public groups and organizations. On June 19, 1926, he was united in marriage to Mabel E. Hoskin of Cantril. To this union was born one daughter, Mary Lou, now Mrs. Richard Mairet of Keosauqua. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Keosauqua Methodist church. Rev. Burton C. Bastuscheck was in charge. Music was provided by Keith Gaston and Mrs. Esther Arthmann. Pallbearers were Earl Watson, Everett Scotten, Alva Anson, Forrest Dunshee, Elwood Hall and Wayne Davidson. Interment was in the Cantril cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mabel Miller, one daughter, Mrs. Richard Mairet and a granddaughter, Paula Mairet, of Keosauqua. One sister, Mrs. Edna Saar of Donnellson, also survives.
