He was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Loveland to Mabel and John Stopher and was a nephew of Abner Sprague, noted pioneer in Larimer County and homesteader in Rocky Mountain National Park. He was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Loveland to Mabel and John Stopher and was a nephew of Abner Sprague, noted pioneer in Larimer County and homesteader in Rocky Mountain National Park. Edgar was raised in Loveland, and graduated from Loveland High School in 1929. He continued his education at the University of Colorado and earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1932; he was a member of SAE fraternity. He also attended several other universities in hotel management programs. During World War II, he served as a major in the U.S. Army Air Forces, stationed mainly at Buckley Field in Aurora. In the early 1940's, Edgar took over the summer operation of Sprague's Lodge from his uncle and and ran a guest ranch in Arizona during the winter months. When Sprague's original homestead in Moraine Park became available, he bought Steads Ranch and Hotel and sold his Arizona property. He operated Sprague's Lodge and Stead's Ranch concurrently until the government lease for Sprague's ran out in 1957. Edgar continued to operate Steads until 1962, when the U.S. government bought that property. Edgar went with the Del Webb Corp in the hotel division in Arizona; later he was the general manager of the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. In 1970, he joined the Sheraton Corp as general manager of the French Lick Springs Hotel in French Lick, Ind., and after nine years, he became the general manager for Sheraton at Steamboat Springs. He rose to area manager for the North American division and in successive years was named vice president and area director of development. He retired in 1985. Edgar was active in the Estes Park community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce and as president of the Board of Education for Estes Park schools. Being a 32nd degree Mason, he helped found the Estes Park Masonic Lodge. Professionally, he was instrumental in establishing the Colorado Dude Ranch Association and was active in the Colorado Hotel Association. After retirement, Edgar in affection and respect for his uncle worked with the Rocky Mountain Nature Asociation in publishing Abner's autobiography--"The Memoirs of Abner E. Sprague." This is a legacy of both men and of the history of the area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Stopher. He is survived by three daughters, Karen Stopher Stapleton of Loveland, Lee Stopher and husband Doug Mitchell of Tempe, Ariz., and Dana Stopher and husband Dick Griffen of Steamboat Springs; and a son, Robert and wife Teresa of Gainesville, Texas, formerly of Estes Park; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Cremation has been completed. A memorial service at the Estes Park Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 183, 1820 S. St. Vrain Ave., will be held Nov. 7, 2003, at 3 p.m. with a reception following the service. Interment will be held at Loveland Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Edgar M. Stopher Memorial, Rocky Mountain National Park Association, P.O.
