Her baptism was performed on March 3, 1872, by Pastor Felden at Leerhafe, and the name Edin Diederike was given her. POPPE 1872 – 1944 Mrs. Gerhard Henry Poppe was born on January 30, 1872, at Leerhafe, County of Wittmund, East Friesland, Germany, the daughter of Edo Janssen Folkerts and his wife, Altien Margaretha Folkerts, nee Harms. Her baptism was performed on March 3, 1872, by Pastor Felden at Leerhafe, and the name Edin Diederike was given her. She was instructed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith on April 25, 1886, she was confirmed. Three years later, at the age of 17, she immigrated to the United States. She left Germany on March 20 1889 and arrived at Monticello on April 1, 1889. About two years later, on December 17, 1891, she was united in marriage to Gerhard Henry Poppe by Pastor Christopher Mardorf at the home of her parents in Wayne Township. To this union three children were born, John, Maria, and Ed Johnson. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on December 17, 1941, in the midst of her children and relatives in good health. Since her coming from Germany she became and remained a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church, and was a member here for 55 years. She was also a charter member of the Zion Ladies Aid society. On Tuesday, May 9, she was stricken with a stroke of apoplexy, and was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Riedel in Monticello. Her condition became worse and on Monday morning, May 29, at 8 a.m. she passed away. Her age was 72 years, and 4 months. Her son, Edo, her parents, and three brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Gerhard Henry Poppe, Wayne Township; her son John Poppe and family, Amber; her daughter, Meta Maria (Mrs. George E. Rickels) and family, Wayne Township; seven grandchildren, and six sisters in Germany and many neighbors and friends.
