| Description | : | Edith was born June 13, 1910 in Newell to James Christian and Marie (Larsen) Mortensen. She was raised and educated in the Newell area, graduating from the Newell Consolidated High School. She worked for many years as a cook at Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs. She later worked at Buena Vista County Hospital as a housekeeping maid. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, dancing and was an excellent cook. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, William F. Smith, Jr. and Myron C. Avery; a son, William F. Smith, III; a daughter, Carol E. (Smith) Petersen; four sisters: Caroline Sondergaard, Lesa Andersen, Anna Smith and Laura Shultz; and a brother, Henry. |
