''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), August 21, 1941, p. 1, col. 6 A RISING CITY RESIDENT PASSED AWAY ON AUGUST 13 Mrs. James Garhan Died in Columbus Wednesday, Aug. 13 Rising City, Aug. 18 - Funeral services for Mrs. James Garhan of Rising City, who passed away at the Lutheran hospital in Columbus Wednesday, Aug. 13, after illness of two weeks, were held in the Rising City Lutheran church at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Vance Baird. Two hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden," were sung by Mrs. John Bates and Mrs. H. Treadway, with Mrs. O. A. Wickert accompanist. The pallbearers were Claude Allen, Joe Kahler, Charles Morgan, Walter Pool, W. E. Parks and J. R. Wilson. Burial was in Circle Mound cemetery. Many friends and relatives from Omaha, Lincoln, and surrounding towns in the county were in attendance at the funeral services. Edith Doty, daughter of Gillis and Jane Doty, was born August 5, 1867, in Lena, Ill., and at time of death was aged 74 years and 8 days. In 1875, at the age of eight years, she accompanied her parents to their new home one mile northeast of Rising City. On April 16, 1886, she was married in David City to James Garhan. For many years they made their home on a farm 2½ miles northeast of Rising City until 1919, when on Mr. Garhan's retirement from active farming they moved to their home in Rising City. Five children, three sons and two daughters, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Garhan. One son, Earl, died in infancy. The children who with their father survive are Glen Garhan of Rising City, William Garhan of Newton, Kas., and Miss Mildred Garhan and Mrs. Neil Hompes of Lincoln. Also surviving Mrs. Garhan are two grandsons, Jack and James Garhan of Newton, Kas., one sister, Mrs. Ida Holderness of Rising City, and a host of friends. Mrs. Garhan's life was characterized by many fine attributes of character. She was a devoted wife and mother and a good neighbor and friend, always interested in the joys and sorrows of those about her. She was keenly sensitive to beauty and expressed her artistic ideas in a practical way, making her farm and town homes places of charm and beauty.
