Edith was born on January 21, 1913, to Frank and Elizabeth (Portersfield) Carson in Woodburn, Iowa. In 1931, Edith married Russell Thornton. Together they farmed east of Osceola from 1931 to 1977. In 1977, they retired to a home in Osceola. Upon the passing of her husband, Russell, in 1988, Edith moved to Westward Manor.
