Born in her paternal grandparents' log cabin in North Vernon, Indiana, Edith and her parents, sister, and brothers moved to a farm in South Dakota in 1918. In 1923, the family moved to Northern California where Edith's parents, Harry and Violet Holsclaw, leased a fruit farm near Newcastle for a year. When Edith's father established Holsclaw's Feed & Fuel at Elm and High Streets, the family relocated to Auburn where they put down permanent roots. Edith graduated from Placer High School in 1927 and attended Sacramento City College before receiving a scholarship to U.C. Berkeley. In 1932, she graduated in psychology with honors and returned to Auburn to settle on Edgewood Road, where she and her husband, Neal Snow, raised four children on their farm. When Edith was in her early 60s, she enrolled in creative writing classes at Sierra College, where her teacher and mentor, Bill Hotchkiss, encouraged her talent for poetry. Drawing on childhood memories, her love of nature, and her experiences with farming and livestock, Edith's first volume of "earth" poems, Winter Tree, was published to local acclaim in 1968. Subsequently, Edith published six books, culminating with Ice Cream in August in 1992. Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Edith is survived by her brothers, Everett and Fritz Holsclaw; her children, Monica Roberts, Judith Hanley, Jerry Snow, Sami Snow, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the owners and caregivers at Vista Oaks, Dr. James Wolf, and Kelly Carpenter for their outstanding care and devotion to Edith during her lengthy illness. At the request of the deceased, no service will be held. A native of Indiana, she was an Auburn area resident since childhood. Her father, Harry Holsclaw, was a fruit rancher who later established Holsclaw's Feed and Fuel in central Auburn. She graduated from Placer High School and attended Sacramento City College before earning a psychology degree at UC Berkeley. She was in her early 60s when she enrolled in a creative writing class at Sierra College where her teacher, Bill Hotchkiss, encouraged her talent for poetry. Her first volume of poems "Winter Tree" was published in 1968. She went on to publish six more poetry books. She is survived by her children, Monica Roberts, Julia Hanley, Jerry Snow and Sami Snow; brothers Everett and Fritz Holsclaw; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by Neal Snow, her husband of 59 years. In accordance with her wishes, no services were held.
