(Source: Iowa, Select Marriages Index) =============================================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, June 13, 1935; pg. 8 Edith Spence was born September 15, 1857, at North Hampton, Clark county (sic), Ohio, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.E. Chamberlain, Sunday, June 9, 1935. With her widowed mother she moved to Union county (sic), Iowa, in the Spring of 1873, and November 30th of that same year she was united in marriage to John M. Burd. In the Fall of 1877 they moved by wagon to Nuckolls county (sic), Nebraska, and established their first home here in a dugout. She and her family endured the many trials of pioneer life. She leaves to mourn her departure the aged husband with whom she worked side by side for nearly sixty-two years; one daughter, Mrs. C.E. Chamberlain of Chadron; three sons, Bert of Norton, Kansas; J. Alonzo of Nelson, Nebr.; and Cecil of Martin, So. Dak.; sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grand children. Mr. and Mrs. Burd moved from Nelson to Chadron in 1919 and then to Martin, So. Dak., in 1930, where they have resided since. Mrs. Burd was the first typist in the Nuckolls county (sic) court house. The body was brought to Nelson and the funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church (sic) at 2:30 on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. John Caldwell. The aged husband through frailty of health, was unable to be at this service.
