She passed away May 28 at Providence Hospital with family by her side. She was able to leave the hospital long enough on April 25th to celebrate her 100th birthday with family and friends. She wanted everyone to know she had a wonderful time. She was the youngest and last of her parents Elias and Maggie Shultz Layton's children. She passed away May 28 at Providence Hospital with family by her side. She was able to leave the hospital long enough on April 25th to celebrate her 100th birthday with family and friends. She wanted everyone to know she had a wonderful time. She was the youngest and last of her parents Elias and Maggie Shultz Layton's children. Her siblings were Ernest, Estella Smith and Elna Armstrong. Her grandfather Samuel Layton, with her father Francis, tooK up donation land claims on Layton Prairie Knob in 1851. She loved all her life on the prairie. She was a farmer starting in WWI when she helped her father in the fields while men were at war. She continued with her husband Mark. They were married 63 years. He passed away in 1986. She was still seen in the fields working at age 97 and in her garden at 99. She is survived by her children Margaret Denzil Cole, Ethel, Marie and Glenn Thompson and Gary and Beverly Kirkendoll, Toledo; grandchildren Gene Cole, Vancouver, Rick and Pam Cole, Ethel, Sheryl and George McKinley, Chehalis, Dana and Mike Freeland, Kent, Scott and Sheryl Thompson, Toledo, Rob and Jill Kirkendoll, Sumner, Don Bauer Kirkendoll, Montana, Les Kirkendoll, Toledo, 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She had a wonderful birthday party. She asked that there be no service. She is a lesson in fortitude, one of a kind and will be greatly missed. Remembrances may be to a charity of the donor's choice.
