Edith was born November 27, 1922, in Burdett, Kansas, to Walter James and Bessie Edith (Delp) Hendershot. She attended grade school and high school in Burdett graduating in 1940. She married Robert D. Smith on September 14, 1941, in Burdett. He died May 17, 2002. Edith was born November 27, 1922, in Burdett, Kansas, to Walter James and Bessie Edith (Delp) Hendershot. She attended grade school and high school in Burdett graduating in 1940. She married Robert D. Smith on September 14, 1941, in Burdett. He died May 17, 2002. Edith received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics with a secondary teacher's certification in the spring of 1961 from Fort Hays State College. She taught Home Economics in the Hays School District from 1966 until 1983. Edith was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Retired Faculty Wives of FHSU, Various Bridge Groups, Kappa Gamma Chi, Ellis County Retired Teachers, Fort Hays State University Century Club, Kappa Omicron Phi, Frederick A. Browne American Legion. Survivors include her 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Dean Smith, an infant daughter, Judith Mae Smith, Brother Dale James Hendershot. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 11, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Hays. Burial and graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Brown's Grove Cemetery in Burdett, Kansas. Friends may call at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine on Sunday from 4 until 6 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 until service time at the church. Memorials in her name and memory may be given to the First United Methodist Church of Hays, Mary C. Norris Methodist Church of Burdett, Kansas, or the Good Samaritan Society of Hays.
