Description	:	Edith Pauline Hols, 94, of Duluth, died suddenly on Jan. 16 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Farmington, Iowa, to Harry R. and Capitola (Blackmer) Jones. She married John A. Hols on June 4, 1932 in Fort Madison, Iowa. She earned a B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 1964, an M.A. from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., in 1965, and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1970. Read More	Edith Pauline Hols, 94, of Duluth, died suddenly on Jan. 16 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Farmington, Iowa, to Harry R. and Capitola (Blackmer) Jones. She married John A. Hols on June 4, 1932 in Fort Madison, Iowa. She earned a B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 1964, an M.A. from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., in 1965, and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1970. Edith taught linguistics at the University of Minnesota Duluth from 1970 until her retirement in 1982. She coordinated development of the UMD linguistics program and English as a Second Language program, and in 1975 was instrumental in founding the Lake Superior English Language Institute to help foreign students develop English language skills. She was active in civic affairs for many years and participated in a book group of UMD retirees. She was an extraordinary woman, much loved and admired by her extensive family. She loved literature, music, especially opera, and foreign travel. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1966; son, John A. Hols of Spokane, Wash., in 2006; sister, Nellie Naefie, of Burlington and Iowa City, Iowa. She is survived by her son, David R. (Marge) Hols of St. Paul; daughter-in-law, Norma Hols of Spokane; four grandchildren, Laura J. (A. Carson) Toepfer of Spokane, Eric D. Hols of Ashburn, Va., (Greta Hols, of Woodbridge, Va.); Brian R. Hols (Susan) of Minneapolis and Jennifer A. Hols of St. Paul; six great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several grand nieces; and a grand nephew. MEMORIAL GATHERING:in Duluth is being planned. A graveside service for family members will be held at Bonaparte Cemetery, Bonaparte, Iowa. The Lunning Funeral Home in Burlington, Iowa, is assisting with arrangements. Memorials preferred to Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, 4503 Airpark Blvd., Duluth 55811.
