Friends may call at the Bucher Funeral Home Saturday evening. ______________ The Gazette and Daily, Friday June 11, 1954 Woman Is Third Victim Of Crash Mrs. Edith Smithoover, 25, of Spring Grove RD 2, died at 10:55 a.m. yesterday at Hanover General Hospital, the third fatality of a head-on automobile collision Sunday near Hanover. Two men from Hampstead, Md., RD 1 – Larry Leister Stricklin, 22, and Arthur L. Reed, 24 – were killed in the accident. William Brady, 27, of McSherrystown, suffered multiple injuries and was reported in satisfactory condition yesterday at the hospital. Coroner Lester J. sell attributed Mrs. Smithoover's death to bronchial pneumonia and internal disruptions after an autopsy yesterday afternoon. The autopsy was performed by Dr. C. G. Gray, pathologist at Hanover Hospital. It was the 14th traffic death on county roads this year. Mrs. Smithoover earlier had been listed in satisfactory condition but suffered a relapse. She received fractures of the pelvis, ribs and right forearm and multiple cuts on the face and body in the early morning collision, four miles south of Hanover on the Baltimore Pike. Sell said he would not take any action on an inquest into the deaths while Brady remains in critical condition. State police said that a car operated by Stricklin went over the center lane of the highway in rounding a curve and crashed head-on into an on-coming car driven by Brady. Reed was in the Stricklin car and Mrs. Smithoover in the other one. Mrs. Smithoover, wife of S/Sgt. James E. Smithoover, is a daughter of Elmer J. and Mary Strausbaugh Runk, Spring Grove RD 2, with whom she resided. She was a member of Christ Reformed Church, Jefferson, and was affiliated with the Ladies' auxiliary of Jefferson Fire Company and Eastern Star Lodge 378, Hanover. She had been employed by the Emeco Corporation. Surviving, in addition to her parents and husband, are two sons, James E. Jr., and William A. Smithoover, both at home. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Frederick Bucher Funeral Home, Frederick Street, Hanover. Her pastor, Rev. Dr. Paul D. Yoder, will officiate. Interment will be in Jefferson Cemetery.
