EDIETH WILEY ADAMS Edieth Wiley Adams was born in Indiana January 11, 1840, and passed away at Aurora May 11, 1933, age 93 years and 4 months. She received her education in a log school house. In 1856 she married James Franklin Adams, to which union seven children were born, three of whom died - Mary Jane Johnston about four years ago and Casper and Henry in their infancy. Shortly after her marriage they moved to Galesburg, Illinois, and then to Osceola, Iowa, where they resided a number of years before coming to Nebraska. In the fall of 1872 Mr Adams came to Hamilton county and took a homestead near Marquette. He built a dugout and went back to Iowa and moved the family to Seward for the winter coming to Hamilton county in the spring. On Easter day a terrible blizzard occurred that has gone down in history as one of the landmarks of early pioneer life. Mr and Mrs Adams were instrumental in the early days in aiding the development of the pioneers who came and settled Hamilton county. Mr Adams was one of the first county commissioners of Hamilton county and assisted in laying out the townships of Hamilton county. In the early days court was held at their place and a pony express station was at their home which was known at that time as Avon. An old sod church was located just about 100 yards east of their home where the early pioneers used to come and worship. When the Burlington line was extended from Aurora north the workmen were boarded by Mrs Adams. Their home was the center of one of the early Grange organizations. Aunt Edie as she was known to the early settlers served as a nurse and doctor to the whole country and a great many people are living today who were ushered into the world by her. Her influence has caused many young men and women to live better lives. She always was ready to welcome a visitor and they were welcome as long as they wished to stay. In the ninety-three years of her life Mrs Adams has seen the United States take part in four wars and several depressions. She has seen it change from the old fashioned spinning wheel and cradle to the modern days of radio and aeroplane but in all that time her faith in God and man has not changed. She was a member of the Christian church in Marquette before it disbanded and for the past thirty years has been a devout student of Christian Science. Four children and a host of grand children, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren survive her. The children are Mrs E E Hixon, of Imperial; Thomas N Adams of Grand Island, Nebr; Frank Adams of Washington D C, and Chas Adams of Aurora, Nebr. Her husband passed ay in 1913.
