Dinwoody): Suddenly, at his home on Victoria Street, Shelburne, after three years of cheerfully borne indifferent health, there passed away on Wednesday, June 11th, 1958, Edmond Carleton Mandley, second youngest in the family of nine children of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Mandley, Sr. Born in Amaranth Township, he attended Maple Grove public school and in 1909 married Ethel Maud Silk. They farmed in Melancthon and Amaranth Townships for ten years, during which time three children, who survive him, were born: Chester, at home; Gladys (Mrs. J. E. Yaegar), of Toronto, and Freda (Mrs. A. E. LeBlanc), of Copper Cliff. Besides his wife and three children, also surviving are one brother, Alfred, and two sisters -Frances (Mrs. George Budd) and Etta (Mrs. William Stoddart). While farming, Mr. Mandley found time to "frame" many barns throughout the county and was engaged by the then County Engineer, U. W. Christie, to supervise the construction of the Third Line of Amaranth as a county road. In 1924 he moved with his family to Shelburne, at which time he was appointed Road Superintendent for the Township of Amaranth, which position he held for 32 years until his retirement due to ill health in 1956. He became a recognized authority in road building and his counsel was often sought on road problems by those charged with this responsibility in other Municipalities. "Ed.", as he was known, was a member of the Ontario Good Roads Association, which body in recognition of his abilities, had him on occasion prepare and deliver a paper on "The Care of the Roadside." He was particularly interested in school affairs. For a time while in Amaranth he served on the Coleridge School Board and later, for many years, he served as a member and as chairman of Shelburne Board of Education. During the construction period of the new Centre Dufferin District High School he was the county's representative on that board, retiring three years ago because of ill health. Mr. Mandley was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, a Conservative in politics, and for over 40 years was a member of the Orange Order, at one time being Master of L.O.L. No. 1099, Rich Hill. "Ed" had the qualities of being sincerely loyal to his friends and truthfully frank with those whose views he did not share. A private funeral service on Saturday, June 14th, was conducted at his home, and later a largely attended public service was held in St. Paul's Church with the rector, Rev. Mackenzie Dobson, officiating. Burial took place in Shelburne Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Barrie L. Dales, Aubrey Archibald, Arthur Butcher, George L. Hogg, Dr. W. R. Morgan and R. R. Coleman, former School Board associates, and George Burnside, a former Reeve of Amaranth. Active bearers were five nephews, Alvin Silk, Douglas Silk, Earl Granner, John Mandley, Elmer Mandley and a close friend, John Teeter. Friends from Kincardine, Sudbury, Copper Cliff, Gorrie, Toronto and Orangeville were present to pay their final tribute, along with local friends, to a man whose lasting monument is "the work of his hand and mind." The floral tributes, attesting to the esteem in which Mr. Mandley and his family are held were: Pillow, wife and son Chester.
