Description	:	A very sad accident occurred about ten o'clock Saturday morning when Edmund Swain, commonly known as "Red" was killed while working with the Frank Byers bridge gang. They were three miles south and one and a half miles east of the Grinnell airport building a wooden bridge over a small creek on a by-road running east and west, and had driven in one of the pilings and were ready to drive another one. "Red" went up on the derrick to block the hammer of the derrick when the drag line broke and the derrick fell over sideways, breaking the guy rope. As it fell "Red" jumped with the derrick and it fell on him. It is probable that he was instantly killed. Dr. Talbott of Grinnell was summoned and pronounced him dead at once. The Bramer undertaking parlor was notified and the ambulance arrived upon the scene some hour and a half after the accident. The body was brought to Brooklyn. Edmund Daniel Swain, the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swain, was born on a farm south of Montezuma, April 20, 1908, and departed this life near Malcom Saturday morning, May 24, 1930, age 22 years, 1 month and 4 days. He received his education in the Brooklyn public school and has always made his home with his parents. His sad death occurred while employed by the county. He leaves to mourn his loss, his father, mother, seven brothers and two sisters: one sister preceding him in death, dying in infancy; also a host of relatives and friends.
