Edmond Rivers was born in Poweshiek county, Iowa, November 17, 1860 (date does not agree with gravestone). He was the second son of John L. and Ann Rivers. From earliest childhood he was taught the love of Christ and all through his life he has never departed from that teaching. Thirty-one years of age he was converted at a revival meeting conducted by the Rev. now Bishop Matt Hughes at the Blue Point church. At this time he united with the M.E. church and has ever been a consistent Christian and a faithful and efficient member of that church, always holding up for that which was right and condemning that which was wrong. He took a great interest in all Christian work. He had been either superintendent or teacher in the Sunday schools for a number of years, until his health began to fail and he was forced to a more quiet life. He was united in marriage to Alice Spillman, Sept. 16, 1883. To this union two sons were born, H.C. Rivers, of Grinnell, and Dr. C.E. Rivers of Mason City. After a lingering illness he passed away November 3, 1918, at the age of 57 years, 11 months and 16 days. Beside the sorrowing wife and two sons, he leaves to mourn his loss, his aged mother, two brothers, J.R. Rivers of Grinnell, and J.P. Rivers of Minneapolis; three grandchildren, and a large circle of relatives and friends. Mr. Rivers was a quiet, unassuming man, yet always thoughtful of those about him. He loved his home, he was a devoted husband and a kind father and a thoughtful neighbor, ever ready with his means to help a good cause, but he has gone to claim his reward in a house not made with hands, where God stands to welcome his coming with "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter in." Short services were held at the home on North Elm street at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, when the body was taken to Blue Point for burial. Here Rev. J.M. Brown of the M.E. church, conducted the service. A quartet composed of Mr. Lowrey, Mr. Reynolds, Mrs. Black and Mrs. Stafford rendered "Nearer, Still Nearer," "Abide With Me," and "Rock of Ages." The pall bearers were Mr. Garner, Mr. Gates, Mr. Erickson, Mr. J.J. Mullin, Mr. Shaw and Mr. Arnold. Those who attended the funeral from out of town were: J.P. Rivers, wife and son, Paul, of Minneapolis; Dr. C.E. Rivers, wife and son, Willard, of Mason City; Will Rivers of Chicago, and Mr. and Mrs. Utterbac_ of Delta.
