Description	:	Mrs. H. S. Merryfield, 46, of 603 Third Street died of cold and exposure in an open shed at the rear of the Mast Implement Co., Saturday night in sub-zero weather. Her frozen body was found face down, covered with Sunday's inch of snowfall, by Guy Mast, owner of the implement company, when he went to the shed at 9 o'clock Monday morning to get his truck. Mrs. Merryfield and her husband had been downtown Saturday evening. Mr. Merryfield had gone home about 9 o'clock, but his wife did not leave until some time after 11 o'clock. She evidently turned from her course while going down the alley back of Main Street and wandered into the open shed, where she is thought to have slipped or stumbled and fallen. Black Hawk County Coroner, Dr. Sidney D. Smith, believed the fall knocked her unconscious and unable to recover before she was overcome by the cold. He considered the bruises on the left side of her face and on her knees to have resulted from the fall. Black Hawk County Deputy Sheriff's W. H. Eichmeier and Eugene Perry investigated the circumstances of the death and checked on where Mrs. Merryfield had bee seen last and by whom. Mr. Eichmeier reported that the deputies did not think any foul play was involved in her death. Mr. Merryfield said his wife sometimes spent the weekend with friends and her failure to return home Saturday night did not alarm him. Mr. Merryfield is Superintendent of the Beu Limestone Co. northeast of LaPorte City. The body was taken to the Johannsen Funeral Home where funeral services were held at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. Z. J. Hougham, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethern Church, officiated and Mrs. Harding Schuman accompanied by Mrs. Herbert Johannsen sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Casket bearers were Ernest Ludgin of Raymond and Melvin Weeks, Merle Hauenstein, Harley Jett, Robert Keegan and Clarence O'Keefe. Burial was made in the Garrett Cemetery at Delta. Edna Beatrice Halferty was born August 3, 1910 to Squire and Ida Halferty in Keokuk County near Sigourney. She grew to womanhood there and graduated from the Sigourney High School. On August 8, 1934 she was united in marriage to Harry Merryfield at Muscatine. She came to La Porte City with her husband from Cedar Rapids during the summer of 1953. Surviving besides her husband are her mother, Mrs. Ida Halferty, Sigourney, two brothers, Roy E. Halferty, Newton; and William Halferty, Los Angeles, California and four sisters, Mrs. Eva Whitmer, Sigourney, Mrs. William Schroder, Rock Island, Illinois; Mrs. Clyde Coble, Corona, California, and Mrs. Jack Johnson, Tracy.
