Description	:	Edna E. Meier was born southeast of Chancellor, South Dakota, on Mar. 12, 1907, the only child of Henry C. and Minnie (Gerken) Meier. Edna's father died in 1914. The family then lived with Minnie's parents. Edna's mother married John Heeren in 1917 and they lived in German Valley, IL, until 1918 when Minnie died. Edna then returned to Lennox and lived with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Meier. She graduated from Lennox High School in 1925 and then attended Nettleton Commercial College. Meier was born southeast of Chancellor, South Dakota, on Mar. 12, 1907, the only child of Henry C. and Minnie (Gerken) Meier. Edna's father died in 1914. The family then lived with Minnie's parents. Edna's mother married John Heeren in 1917 and they lived in German Valley, IL, until 1918 when Minnie died. Edna then returned to Lennox and lived with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Meier. She graduated from Lennox High School in 1925 and then attended Nettleton Commercial College. On Jun. 6, 1929, she married Henry P. "Tubby" Smit. The couple made their home in Lennox and in 1942 moved to their farm south of Lennox. In 1987 they moved back into Lennox. "Tubby" died on Sep. 22, 1989. His death ended a marriage partnership of over 60 years. She moved to the Lennox Good Samaritan Center in April of 1989. Edna was a life long member of Second Reformed Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and served as custodian for several years. She was also active in the Philathea Guild for many years. Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two daughters; Sharon Smit on Oct. 6, 1976, and Harriet Tipton on Nov. 15, 1997, two sons-in-law: Les Tipton on Aug. 5, 1994, and Walter "Bud" Tipton on Jan. 31, 1997, one great-granddaughter, Lacy Tipton, on Nov. 22, 1988, three step-siblings; Sara, Enos and G.B. Heeren and brother-in-law Bert Smit who died one day before Edna on Apr. 23, 1998. Having been in failing health, Edna died at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center on Apr. 24, 1998. She attained the age of 91 years, one month and 12 days. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Carol Tipton of Lennox; nine grandchildren: Terry Tipton of Cecil, WI, Dave Tipton and Sandy Zwart of Lennox, Lois DeNeui of Sioux Falls, Wayne and Wesley Tipton of Pecantonica, IL, Linda Tipton of Winnebago, IL, Wendell Tipton and Elaine McKee of Ridott, IL, and 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, and step-sister-in-law Mrs. G.B. (Marie) Heeren of Sheldon, IA.
