Sanderlin has been the agent of a patent medicine concern ever since he has moved to the county, and has treated several cased in his community. The circumstances surrounding the young lady’s death were such that a coroner’s inquest was thought necessary. Accordingly State’s Attorney H. R. Berndt, Deputy Sheriff Frank Barnes, Health Officer Brandt and Coroner E. G. Field wen tot the Sanderlin home, where an inquest was held. However the jury returned the following verdict: “That Edna Mattis came to her death as a result of dropsy resulting from acute nephritis, and not from any unlawful means.” Arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been made. The Bismarck Daily Tribune, Tuesday, August 16, 1910, Page 2. ~ Miss Edna Mattis, the fourteen year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mattis of Hawkeye, died last Sunday morning at the home of John Sandelin, in Grass Lake township, after an illness of several months duration with dropsy. An inquest was held Monday at the house, Dr. Brandt, health officer, and Coroner Field, both of Bismarck, being present. Funeral services were held only at the grave, owing to the fact that Mr. Sandelin and family are quarantined for diphtheria. Burial was made in a cemetery about twenty miles northeast of Wilton. Much interest has been manifested in the above and several other cases of sickness northeast of town, as the Wilton physicians maintain that diphtheria has been running for months, and Mr. Sandelin, who does a great deal of doctoring and yet is not a licensed physician, claims that the physicians are entirely wrong.
