Description	:	Edna (Wilkens) Rahn, 89, of Bismarck, ND formerly of Hazen, ND died Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Edna was born on January 7, 1926 to Dick and Anna (Schwarting) Wilkens on a farm near Youngtown, ND. At the age of three, Edna’s father died from a farm accident in 1929. Read More	Edna (Wilkens) Rahn, 89, of Bismarck, ND formerly of Hazen, ND died Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Edna was born on January 7, 1926 to Dick and Anna (Schwarting) Wilkens on a farm near Youngtown, ND. At the age of three, Edna’s father died from a farm accident in 1929. Her family moved in with her Grandmother Schwarting in New Salem for many years. Edna started first grade in New Salem before the family moved back to the farm, where continued her schooling from second to eighth grade at the country school, Garfield #3. Edna graduated from New Salem High School in 1944 and went to one year of college at Dakota Business in Fargo, ND. Edna worked at several business in Fargo and then moved to Bismarck where she worked at Bismarck Hospital, which is now Sanford Health, until getting married to Emil Rahn on October 19, 1952 in New Salem at Friedens Evangelical Church. To this union, two children were added, Robert in 1956 and Mary in 1960. Edna stared working at the Hazen Hospital after marrying Emil and worked there for 30 years and also spent some time working at the Hazen Clinic. Emil passed away on January 24, 1994. In March 2010, Edna moved to Liberty Heights in Mandan, ND and then to Edgewood Village in October 2010. Edna enjoyed many crafts especially cross-stitching, crocheting and sewing. She made many afghans and table runners for her family and friends. Edna was an excellent cook and liked to make traditional German dishes as well as baking and making candy. Upon retirement, she was active at the Hazen Senior Center and was a board member of meals on wheels. Edna is survived by her daughter, Mary (Ken) Schmidt of Solen, ND and their children, Travis (Stephanie) and Amy (John) Lord, all of Solen; her daughter-in-law, Janet Rahn of Moorhead, MN and her children, Danielle (George) Vinson of Harwood, ND and Nicholas Rahn of Minneapolis, MN; two great-grandchildren, Kendall Lord and Logan Schmidt; one brother, Dick of Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Eldris Wilkens of Finley, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil; her parents, Dick and Anna; one son, Bob; one sister, Estella (Mark) Laverick; two brothers, Erich (Evelyn) and Walter; one sister-in-law, Anita Wilkens; and all of Emil’s siblings and their spouses.
