Shugart, 96, know throughout most of eastern Washington as "Charlie" Shugart, died Thursday at Cascade sanitarium, Leavenworth, after a brief illness. He was born in Illinois and went to Kansas while still a lad. He married Priscilla Reeder, August 7, 1884, in Kansas. He was born in Illinois and went to Kansas while still a lad. He married Priscilla Reeder, August 7, 1884, in Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Shugart and family moved west in 1891, coming to Washington, where they homesteaded in the Beaver creek area (now Plain), about 16 miles north of a Great Northern railroad surveyors camp where Leavenworth was later established. In Many Ventures The Shugart family raised vegetables, livestock and poultry, which they hauled to Leavenworth, then the railroad division point, also hay and grain, and later, when a sawmill was built at Leavenworth shortly after the turn of the century, Mr. Shugart also engaged in logging, the logs being hauled to Leavenworth on a logging railroad built by the lumber company. Mrs. Shugart died in 1902, and in 1908, Mr. Shugart married Mrs. Mary Ricedorff McCardle, herself a member of a pioneer Waterville family. She died in 1949, at an advanced age. He is survived by one son, George Shugart of Harrison, Idaho; one daughter, Mrs. Earl West, of Leavenworth; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held today at the Community Methodist church at Leavenworth with the Rev. C. M. Estabrook conducting the rites. Burial was in the Shugart family cemetery at Plain.
