Surrounded by family, Edris Mason Fann, 101 years and 8 months old, passed away May 23, 2016 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center due to complications following a stroke. Edris was the fifth of eleven siblings of Clarence and Nellie (Pace) Mason. She was born in New Market, Iowa on September 6, 1914. She spent most of her life in the Clarinda, Iowa area, graduating from Clarinda High School in 1932. For many years she was an employee of the Mental Health Institute where she met Lyle Fann. They were married November 16, 1936. To their union were born six children: Allen, Karen, Judy, Elaine, Jill and Randy. Following Karen’s death in 1977, Edris was a mother as well as grandmother to Karen’s children, Tammy, David, Allan, and Larry. Edris held various jobs including a brief stint in the Mount Pleasant ammunitions plant during WWII, Owen’s Drug, Goldenrod Nursing Home, and Iowa Western’s cafeteria. After a fall in February, she underwent physical rehabilitation at Westridge Care and Rehab Center with the goal of returning to her home…..which she accomplished. Her family gathered at her home every September to celebrate her birthday. The First Christian Church doubled in size on that weekend. She was an active member of the church and continued to host meetings of the Esther circle in her home. Edris’s husband and brothers served in WWII and she was a loyal member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Edris was also a strong supporter of all athletics including CHS Cardinals and the IWCC Bluejay baseball and basketball teams. She earned her own Kansas City Royals jersey this fall when they won the World Series and has suffered with her Dallas Cowboys these last few seasons. Edris enjoyed hosting a Kentucky Derby party each spring. For over 70 years she has remained at her 123 South 19th street home. Edris might be best remembered for the L&E Drive Inn (College Inn) that she and Lyle owned, located by the Clarinda Junior College campus (Iowa Western). Edris and Lyle became friends and “parents” with many of the college students. Preceding her in death was her husband, Lyle Fann (1971) and daughters, Karen (1977) and Judy (2012).
